In the countryside of Morocco, Berber women (an ethnic group central to Morocco) spend hours a day harvesting argan seeds, which then they extract the oil and send it overseas. Moroccan argan oil is used anywhere from food to beauty products and has been evaluated at a multi-billion dollar market. the women harvesting the seeds and extracting the oil make around $221 a month. Most women say they are struggling to survive off such a small salary but have trouble finding work in other job fields. It is not uncommon for people in underdeveloped countries to be severely underpaid for doing intense manual labor with poor technology. So why in 2020 are we still buying the products?
